Retina

The retina is a thin membrane that covers the posterior, inner wall of the eye and is its the most vital and sensitive part.

Its main function is the translating of optical image into neural impulses. Visual signals are then transfered to the brain where the representation of the external environment is formed.

The retina consists of several layers. One of them contains the primary light-sensing photoreceptor cells - rods and cones.
