Venous valves

With increasing age, the venous valves slowly wear out and lose elasticity, which decreases the ability to prevent backward blood flow. This disorder leads to the accumulation of blood in the veins of the lower extremities, an increase in venous pressure, and swelling. Additionally, blood flow is slowed down resulting in inflammation of the venous wall which may develop into blood clots (thrombi).
