There are many types of receptors with specific structures and functions. Cell surface receptors are necessary for communication between the cell and its surroundings. They are a part of the cell membrane and transduce signals by their structural changes. A change in structure of the receptor passes the signal to other molecules in a chain reaction sequence. Finally, the signal travels to the cell nucleus which then adjusts cellular processes accordingly.
