Macula lutea
The macula lutea is a small yellowish oval spot near the central part of the retina, providing central vision. It contains the highest density of one type of photoreceptor cells - cones, and therefore there is the sharpest vision in this area.Its yellow colour comes from its content of carotenoids - lutein and zeaxanthin which have protective function there.
