Filaggrin

Filaggrin is a base structural component of stratum corneum (the uppest layer of the epidermis), where it binds keratin fibres and causes their aggregation into thicker fibres labeled as macrofibrils. These form a highly insoluble keratin matrix. This matrix acts as a protein scaffold for the attachment of cornified-envelope proteins and lipids that together form the stratum corneum.
