Corneocyte

Corneocytes form during the process of keratinization when keratinocytes (skin cells) are transformed into corneocytes (surface cells), which gradually desquamate (flake off) and are replaced by cells from deeper layers of the skin. Layers of corneocytes produce high mechanical strength which allows epidermis of the skin to perform its function as a physical, chemical and immunological barrier.
