Alkaloids are produced by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. The biological properties of various alkaloids have also led to their use as pharmaceuticals (morphine), narcotics (cocaine), stimulants (nicotine), and poisons (strychnine). Although alkaloids act on a diverse range metabolic systems in humans and other animals, they almost uniformly evoke a bitter taste.
